    Distribution-oblivious Online Algorithms for Age-of-Information Penalty Minimization

    The ever-increasing needs of supporting real-time applications have spurred new studies on minimizing Age-of-Information (AoI), a novel metric characterizing the data freshness of the system. This work studies the single-queue information update system and strengthens the seminal results of Sun et al. on the following fronts: (i) When designing the optimal offline schemes with full knowledge of the delay distributions, a new fixed-point-based method is proposed with quadratic convergence rate, an order-of-magnitude improvement over the state-of-the-art; (ii) When the distributional knowledge is unavailable (which is the norm in practice), two new low-complexity online algorithms are proposed, which provably attain the optimal average AoI penalty; and (iii) the online schemes also admit a modular architecture, which allows the designer to upgrade certain components to handle additional practical challenges. Two such upgrades are proposed for the situations: (iii.1) The AoI penalty function is also unknown and must be estimated on the fly, and (iii.2) the unknown delay distribution is Markovian instead of i.i.d. The performance of our schemes is either provably optimal or within 3% of the omniscient optimal offline solutions in all simulation scenarios

    Unifying AoI Minimization and Remote Estimation — Optimal Sensor/Controller Coordination with Random Two-way Delay

    The ubiquitous usage of communication networks in modern sensing and control applications has kindled new interests on the timing coordination between sensors and controllers, i.e., how to use the waiting time\u27\u27 judicially to improve the system performance. Contrary to the common belief that a zero-wait policy is optimal, Sun et al. showed that a controller can strictly improve the data freshness, the so-called Age-of-Information (AoI), by postponing transmission in order to lengthen the duration of staying in a good state. The optimal waiting policy for the sensor side was later characterized in the context of remote estimation. Instead of focusing on the sensor and controller sides separately, this work develops the jointly optimal sensor/controller waiting policy in a Wiener-process system. This work generalizes the above two important results in the sense that not only do we consider joint sensor/controller designs (as opposed to sensor-only or controller-only schemes), but we also assume random delay in both the forward and feedback directions (as opposed to random delay in only one direction). In addition to provable optimality, extensive simulation is used to verify the performance of the proposed scheme

    Genotoxicity Assessment of Multispecies Probiotics Using Reverse Mutation, Mammalian Chromosomal Aberration, and Rodent Micronucleus Tests

    Genotoxicity assessment is carried out on freeze dried powder of cultured probiotics containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus LCR177, Bifidobacterium adolescentis BA286, and Pediococcus acidilactici PA318. Ames tests, in vitro mammalian chromosome aberration assay, and micronucleus tests in mouse peripheral blood are performed. For 5 strains of Salmonella Typhimurium, the Ames tests show no increased reverse mutation upon exposure to the test substance. In CHO cells, the frequency of chromosome aberration does not increase in responding to the treatment of probiotics. Likewise, the frequency of micronucleated reticulocytes in probiotics-fed mice is indistinguishable from that in the negative control group. Taken together, the toxicity assessment studies suggest that the multispecies probiotic mixture does not have mutagenic effects on various organisms

    CCN2 Enhances Resistance to Cisplatin-Mediating Cell Apoptosis in Human Osteosarcoma

    Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common form of malignant bone tumor and is an aggressive malignant neoplasm exhibiting osteoblastic differentiation. Cisplatin is one of the most efficacious antitumor drugs for osteosarcoma patients. However, treatment failures are common due to the development of chemoresistance. CCN2 (also known as CTGF), is a secreted protein that binds to integrins, modulates the invasive behavior of certain human cancer cells. However, the effect of CCN2 in cisplatin-mediated chemotherapy is still unknown. Here, we found that CCN2 was upregulated in human osteosarcoma cells after treatment with cisplatin. Moreover, overexpression of CCN2 increased the resistance to cisplatin-mediated cell apoptosis. In contrast, reduction of CCN2 by CCN2 shRNA promoted the chemotherapeutic effect of cisplatin. We also found that CCN2 provided resistance to cisplatin-induced apoptosis through upregulation of Bcl-xL and survivin. Knockdown of Bcl-xL or survivin removed the CCN2-mediated resistance to apoptosis induced by cisplatin. On the other hand, CCN2 also promoted FAK, MEK, and ERK survival signaling pathways to enhance tumor survival during cisplatin treatment. In a mouse xenograft model, overexpression of CCN2 promoted resistance to cisplatin. However, knockdown of CCN2 increased the therapeutic effect of cisplatin. Therefore, our data suggest that CCN2 might be a critical oncogene of human osteosarcoma for cisplatin-resistance and supported osteosarcoma cell growth in vivo and in vitro

    Compact Dual-Band Dipole Antenna with Asymmetric Arms for WLAN Applications

    A dual-band dipole antenna that consists of a horn- and a C-shaped metallic arm is presented. Depending on the asymmetric arms, the antenna provides two −10 dB impedance bandwidths of 225 MHz (about 9.2% at 2.45 GHz) and 1190 MHz (about 21.6% at 5.5 GHz), respectively. This feature enables it to cover the required bandwidths for wireless local area network (WLAN) operation at the 2.4 GHz band and 5.2/5.8 GHz bands for IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards. More importantly, the compact size (7 mm × 24 mm) and good radiating performance of the antenna are profitable to be integrated with wireless communication devices on restricted RF-elements spaces

    Urothelial carcinoma in a remnant ureter after a radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma: A case report

    AbstractUrothelial carcinoma of a ureteral stump after a radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma is rare. We present the case of a 76-year-old man with painless gross hematuria. The patient had undergone a right nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma 30 months previously. Cystoscopy showed a blood clot in the right ureteral orifice, and ureteroscopy revealed a papillary mass in the right ureter. The patient underwent a right ureterectomy and bladder cuff resection. The pathology examination showed a high-grade urothelial carcinoma. However, a superficial bladder tumor was discovered postoperatively, and a transurethral resection of the bladder tumor was performed. At 8 months postoperatively, the patient was alive with no evidence of recurrence. A ureteral stump evaluation must be performed when painless hematuria is noted in patients after a nephrectomy

    Safety Evaluation of Multiple Strains of Lactobacillus plantarum

    Three lactic acid bacterial strains, Lactobacillus plantarum, HK006, and HK109, and Pediococcus pentosaceus PP31 exhibit probiotic potential as antiallergy agents, both in vitro and in vivo. However, the safety of these new strains requires evaluation when isolated from infant faeces or pickled cabbage. Multiple strains (HK006, HK109, and PP31) were subject to a bacterial reverse mutation assay and a short-term oral toxicity study. The powder product exhibited mutagenic potential in Salmonella Typhimurium strains TA98 and TA1535 (with or without metabolic activation). In the short-term oral toxicity study, rats received a normal dosage of 390 mg/kg/d (approximately 9×109 CFU/kg/d) or a high dosage of 1950 mg/kg/d (approximately 4.5×1010 CFU/kg/d) for 28 d. No adverse effects were observed regarding the general condition, behaviour, growth, feed and water consumption, haematology, clinical chemistry indices, organ weights, or histopathologic analysis of the rats. These studies have demonstrated that the consumption of multiple bacterial strains is not associated with any signs of mutagenicity of S. Typhimurium or toxicity in Wistar rats, even after consuming large quantities of bacteria

    Stability evaluation of inactivated influenza H7N9 vaccines derived from adhesion and suspension MDCK cells

    In recent years, cell-based manufacturing processes for influenza vaccine production has gained a great interest over the egg-based process. We have adapted MDCK cells to grow in chemical-defined medium and found this newly suspension MDCK cell line (sMDCK cells) is very suitable for the production of influenza virus. However, the property of purified antigens from sMDCK cells remains unclear. In this study, a stability program of influenza H7N9 vaccine (NIBRG268 vaccine strain) produced by sMDCK cells was investigated, and the data were compared with the vaccine derived from adhesion MDCK (aMDCK) cells in serum-free medium. The H7N9 bulks (with different storage time) derived from sMDCK and aMDCK cells were stored at 2-8°C for some times, and a number of parameters were used to monitor the H7N9 vaccine antigen stability was evaluated at different periods (1, 2, 3 and 6 months). The monitoring parameters are including virus structure, HA titer, HA content, total protein level, antigenicity, and immunogenicity. The sMDCK-derived H7N9 bulk showed similar virus structure to that aMDCK-derived H7N9 bulk, and there was no obvious change after further 6 months of storage. Furthermore, HA titer, HA content and total protein level of sMDCK- and aMDCK-derived H7N9 bulks were stable after 6 months of storage. sMDCK- and aMDCK-derived H7N9 bulks displayed similar antigenicity detected by hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test using standard serum. Finally, the results of HI and neutralization tests showed that sMDCK- and aMDCK-derived H7N9 vaccines were similar in immunogenicity in BALB/c mice vaccinated with 0.2 μg of H7N9 vaccine with an adjuvant of aluminum hydroxide. These results indicate that sMDCK-derived H7N9 bulk has good stability data similar to the aMDCK-derived H7N9 bulk. Thus, the newly developed suspension MDCK cells show a great market potential over the traditional vaccine manufacturing methods
